#IdentityTheft is big on Instagram

Here’s the premise, you’re a teenager who loves Instagrammin’ your life (like everyone you know). You get paid. You take a picture of your pay check and post it up, you even use the hashtag #payday or something just as obvious. You get on with your week. Suddenly you’re getting bills from debt collection agencies, you’re enrolled in weird donation programmes and you start getting mail from companies all over the world.

This happens, it seriously does. As the US Secret Service and Attorney’s Office told a conference in Minnesota recently, 25 people have been indicted for one of the biggest identity theft and bank fraud schemes ever — with most of their victims being found on Instagram.

There’s nothing wrong with sharing, but maybe be a bit more selective with what info you put out there huh?
