Artist Manabu Ikeda Completes Monumental Pen and Ink Drawing Started Back in 2013

Japanese artist Manabu Ikeda has finally finished his monumental, 13 x 10 foot pen and ink drawing. Inspired by the aftermath of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Rebirth is a meticulously detailed reflection on disaster and recovery.

Ikeda’s skill and dedication is no less inspiring. He worked 10 hours a day in a basement studio at the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin for over three years. He even learned to use his non-dominant hand as a way of continuing the project after dislocating his shoulder in a ski accident!

See more images of Rebirth below or on display at the Chazen Museum of Art until December 11th. You can also watch Colossal’s emotional video montage by filmmakers Clayton Adams and Brad Cisewski.
