The January 2012 ‘Pictures Of the Month’ are curated by Brittanie Pendleton. Brittanie is a self taught artist, who works mostly in photography and illustration, but is also an avid writer of free-verse poetry while dabbling in other mediums in attempt to create what she sees in her mind.

About her work she says;

“My photos ground me and my art in reality, finding meaning where it is missed, or creating one. I like to take photographs of things that people don’t often notice or appreciate fully, the “beauty in the mundane.” I photograph a variety of subjects, most notably landscapes and the scenes from a girl’s life in the South. Many of these scenes are self portraits. Nature and dilapidation also inspire me. When I’m not making art, I am usually blogging, surfing the net, cooking, or hanging out with my boyfriend and our cat and pup.”

Approximately one year ago I interviewed a very wonderful illustrator named Racheal Anilyse. You can read the interview here.  Racheal passed away last November due to a rare skin disease. Racheal and I conversed a few times through flickr and never did she mention her struggles with this condition. She was helpful and inspirational to me at a time I was only realizing that I was a creative individual. I know LAND is about finding young, new, and fresh talent, but I thought I’d dedicate another post to Racheal. Her illustrations were full of life, color, and feeling. It was so wonderful to discover her art and I wish others will continue finding joy from her creations. Although I never met Rachel in real life, I miss her so much already.

According to Pikaland, Racheal’s family started the Racheal Anilyse Art Initiative through the Rose Foundation of Haiti, and that the University of Hartford School of Art has established a scholarship in Racheal’s name. For more information about Racheal, check out Pikaland’s post.

My knees, that crunch and cry more and more with each kilometer that goes past. Tick Tick Tick. An occasional scrape, little bell ringing as i jump over those bumps, small tracks, misty forests, open fields, long tree lined avenues in the freezing afternoon sunshine. I fear my bike will not make it any further, it needs oil, like my knees need cream. 10 hours later, 120 Km later, my freezing body arrives into the heat, a boiling hot bath, head rush, dizziness, naked on the tiled floor of the bathroom, open the door – to get some cold air. Why am I doing this?

Kimbal Bumstead is a performance artist from London. This latest work is entitled “Diagonally Upwards”, a follow-on from last year’s “Diagonally Backwards: Hitch hiking from Greece to London” in July 2011.

Diagonally Upwards is a performance journey diagonally upwards through the winter, travelling from Amsterdam to Lulea (Via Stockholm). An overland journey by bike and hitch-hiking. The characters in this performance are the people who he meets along the way, and the protagonist is himself. He documents their voices and the places he found them in his blog.

This journey is the second side of a triangle that I started making in July 2011 called Diagonally Backwards: hitch-hiking from Athens to London. The third side of the triangle Vertically Down is yet to come.

Basketball is a Vancouver based electronic four piece with an deeply international complexion, reflected more so in their music and facility with languages than in the sport they’ve named themselves for. Their debut EP Maw comes at the end of some lengthy travels; the band spent some years playing in Canada, then in Barcelona and various locales in North Africa, before releasing it midway last year (so we’re a bit late to the table on this one). Even with the delay between inception and debut, Maw is a meaty release – its four tracks clock in at almost 25 minutes total – and the dance party never seems to end. Regardless of any internal variation, the energy remains, across diverse shifts from dub to house and even the more exotic sounding Middle Eastern arrangements and quirky instrumentation. This is a good one.

Documentary and experimental project about mountains. Mountain, conceived from a primary and basic level, even naive or naïf. Search for coherence between feeling and appearance of nature. It tries to focus the emotions in specific locations, in this case in the mountains; sacred subjects throughout history that the maximum gain prominence here. Stone giants. Icons of spiritual elevation. Approach to divinity. “Hanging” Landscapes that defy gravity. Pictorial aesthetics. The camera becomes a brush and is the look that creates the landscape. Painted and magical world built by the psyche. Abyss, dissociation nature and man, escaped beyond. Shapes depuration to reach the poetic essence of basic experiential elements designed into the landscape.
