The Astroboy – Electric Sheep
The Astroboy – The Chromium Fence
If you recognize both “Electric Sheep” and title track “The Chromium Fence” as references to Philip K. Dick, the latter being the title of a relatively obscure short story published early in his career, than you’ve probably been working through the same reading list as Luís Fernandes, aka, The Astroboy. As other reviewers have pointed out, his latest album emerges from a strain of relatively demanding ambient music. Throughout nearly all of The Chromium Fence drone operates beneath a commanding layer of repetitive synths, so a lot of listeners are going to be disappointed that the whole thing doesn’t spin off into some kind of grandiose dub or techno, but if you can resist the urge to anticipate dance tracks Luís rewards you with an enveloping trance instead.
